Liverpool Biennial 2023 is about to start! This year's biennial features a work from Helsinki-based artist Sepideh Rahaa. 💫

Rahaa's work 'Songs to Earth, Songs to Seeds' (2022) portrays the often invisible and inaccessible process of rice cultivation in the paddy lands of Mazandaran, Northern Iran. The almost year-long process is an intergenerational tradition, with knowledge passed down for nearly a century through the artist’s family.

Rahaa centres the role of women's labour, presenting the traditional songs sung by Iranian women during the cultivation and harvest seasons. These songs are passed down between generations of women and contain stories of their daily struggles in Mazani (an indigenous language from Northern Iran). The work invites us to consider the complexity and invisibility of rice cultivation in a contemporary, global context. The crop is both a container for indigenous forms of knowledge and, as a global food staple, is enmeshed within cycles of consumption, neo-colonial food politics and environmental injustice.

Sepideh Rahaa is a multidisciplinary artist, researcher and educator based in Helsinki, Finland. Through her practice, she actively investigates and questions prevailing power structures, social norms and conventions while focusing on womanhood, storytelling and everyday resistances. Currently she is pursuing her doctoral studies in Contemporary Art at Aalto University. Her interests are silenced histories, decolonisation, feminist politics and post-migration matters. Her aim is to initiate methods through contemporary art to create spaces for dialogue. Rahaa's artistic practice combines different disciplines including film and video installation, performance art, painting, poetry and photography.

What an interesting talk we had last night! 💯 Finnish architect Mona Schalin, Eleanor Fawcett from Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation, Professor of Architecture and Environment policy Minna Sunikka-Blank from University of Cambridge, and Junior Research Fellow in Architecture and Architect Sofia Singler from University of Cambridge gathered together to talk about shared spaces and co-housing.

We'd like to thank the speakers for such an inspiring discussion, and @zahahadidfoundation for kindly hosting the event. The event was a part of ongoing @londonfestivalofarchitecture.

We are delighted to announce Niko Hallikainen (@lowincomeglow) as the recipient of the Mind the Gap Residency, 2023.

⁠Niko Hallikainen is a performance poet and novelist born and based in Helsinki. He writes prose in Finnish and performance poetry in English. In his intense and transgressive solo shows, Niko observes the ambivalent intersections of class, sexuality and spirituality, while reading his lyrical writing against ambient soundscapes.

Hosted by Acme (@acme.art) as part of their 50th anniversary year and in partnership with The Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland (@fininst_uk_ireland), the Mind the Gap residency is intended for a Finnish or Finland-based artist facing additional barriers to their artistic practice, and whose practice is aligned to the 2023 @res_artis conference, Mind the Gap: Designing residencies for everyone.

Acme is a charity based in London which provides affordable studios, work/live space and a programme of residencies and awards. Acme’s mission is to support artists in necessitous circumstances.

This year, Acme has embarked upon a year-long programme of events, awards and wider initiatives to mark 50 years of supporting artists.

On 20th – 21st May 2023, almost 30 authors and poets, each representing one European country or territory, will come together at the British Library for a remarkable celebration of the best European poetry and prose translated into English.

The grand finale of the #EuropeanWritersFestival on Sunday 21 May features Finnish author Emmi Itäranta (@emmi_elina). This celebratory final session is about reflection, sci-fi, utopia & pioneering poetry! Other participants include @Anthony1983, Charlotte van den Broeck, @olivierguez & Ana Schnabl. Finland is known to be the happiest country in the world but why? Is this because of people’s access to nature and regular sauna visits or does the country’s shared housing have something to do with it?

Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland will organise a discussion on the themes of co-housing and shared space on 6 June @zahahadidfoundation in London, as a part of London Festival of Architecture 2023.

The speakers include Finnish architect Mona Schalin and Eleanor Fawcett from Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation. The discussion will be moderated by Professor of Architecture and Environment policy, Minna Sunikka-Blank (University of Cambridge), and Junior Research Fellow in Architecture and Architect, Sofia Singler (University of Cambridge).

We welcome Strategy Advisor Malin Groop as the new Chair of the Board. She is an entrepreneur and holds a master's degree in Economics. Groop has helped many iconic Nordic brands through large-scale transformations and worked internationally in Europe, Japan and the United States.

"In this hazy world, I believe arts and culture play an important role in bringing people together. I’m excited to join the board and build further on the great work Tommi Laitio and the team have done," says Groop.

This means that we have to say goodbye to Tommi Laitio, who has been with us for 9 years.

"It has been a great pleasure to help enable bold cultural work between the three countries. In recent years, the Institute has increased the proportion of its budget allocated to programming, changed its name from the Finnish Institute in London to Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland to communicate our broad remit, increased the number of collaborative projects and open calls, made fostering equity a priority, and increased cooperation, particularly between Finland and Scotland. I thank our directors, staff and fellow board members for a joyful, arts-driven and engaging time and wish them courage for the future,” concludes Laitio.
