🔆 We are delighted to welcome our new intern Chelim (Cherry) Gong (@0_chilli_cherry ), who has joined the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland as a Communications Assistant. 🔆

🌐 She is studying MA Arts Administrations and Cultural Policy at Goldsmiths, London. She is passionate about jewellery and fashion, her previous BA major, as well as learning more about different cultures and languages. Cherry is particularly interested in working with EUNIC projects.

🎤 "I am happy to join the team and learn about new cultures and how cultural organisations work. It is a great opportunity to spend my internship here and broaden my horizons.”

Thrilled to reveal the trailer for the 6th edition of In Short Europe film festival, Best of Best 💥

The 6th edition of In Short, Europe, will take place in Scotland for the first time at the Glasgow Film Theatre on April 20th and 21st, followed by screenings in London at the Ciné Lumière from April 26th to 28th! 🎞️

Finnish director Heta Jäälinoja’s (@hetajaalinoja) short film ’Nun or Never!’ will be featured in the Hard Decisions strand, exploring themes of choice and upheaval. In Short, Europe: Best of Best is curated by Balenji Mwiche. 🕯️

In Short, Europe is organised by EUNIC London, the network of European cultural institutes of which the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland is a member, EU Delegation to the UK, Glasgow Film Festival (GFF), and the Institut français du Royaume-Uni.

Across those 5 strands, you’ll get to experience the best in class, including ceremonies and Q&As.

The summer term begins on the 15th of April 2024. We offer classes from beginners to advanced levels on weekday evenings (Mon-Thu) and on Saturdays.

The course will take place in person and online simultaneously, so those who want to attend in person are most welcome to our classroom at the Institute at Somerset House. 💫

Heta Jäälinoja is an internationally acclaimed young animation director. Her films combine vivid drawings
with rich imagination, identifiable everyday comic themes and minimal yet powerful storytelling. Her previous

won more than 12 awards, for example National Grand Prix 2017 at Tampere Film Festival and Best New

🌍 What can other parts of the world learn from Ukraine, as it pioneers bringing acts of ecocide into the discussion of justice in the context of war? The Royal Society of Arts, in collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute London, the Delegation of Flanders (Embassy of Belgium) in the UK and Ireland, Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland, the Cyprus High Commission and EUNIC London (European Union National Institutes for Culture), will host a discussion on the theme on Thursday 28 March at 6.30pm.

The speakers include Marjukka Porvari who works as an environmental expert at the European Commission’s Ukraine Service under the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations. Marjukka Porvari has over 20 years of experience of working for the third sector, central government and research institutions, focusing especially on environmental issues in Eastern Europe.

Sweeping Tide: Notes Toward Decolonial Feminisms
(15th of February – 2nd of March 2024) was part of the Assemblage III: Community and Care programme, organised by the Fine Art team at Northumbria University, supported by the Department of Arts research funds and EDI team at Northumbria University and organised in collaboration with @fininst_uk_ireland @fine_art_csm and @vanegallery.

About the exhibition:
Drawing on transnational traditions of women of colour critique of feminist universalism, particularly the scholarship of María Lugones, the show grapples with questions of violent colonial histories, turbulent political and social presents, and imagining futures of solidarity, community, and resistance. Spread across @gallerynorthumbria and Experimental Studio, the exhibition critically examines issues of patriarchy, migration, and race through diverse geo-political positionalities that complicate local and global relationships.

About the Compositions for Actions Open Call:

This call is for Finnish or Finland-based professional artists and artist groups, along with their international collaborators, aiming to explore the themes of democratisation and participation in the performing and contemporary arts. ✨

Selected projects will receive grants ranging from 5000€ to 15,000€ (including VAT), with a focus on projects taking place in the UK or Ireland during 2024 or early 2025.

Sámi visual artist Outi Pieski's first major solo

Sámi visual artist Outi Pieski's first major solo exhibition in the UK will open this Saturday at Tate St Ives! 👏

Pieski's practice is deeply connected to land. Working primarily with painting and installation, Pieski has gained recognition for her work which explores the spiritual relationship between humans and their environment and raises vital questions around traditional knowledge and Indigenous people’s rights.

The exhibition is on until 6 May.
Join artist Outi Pieski in conversation with Anne Barlow (Director, Tate St Ives) on Saturday 10 February followed by a special performance by Outi Pieski and Eeva-Kristiina Nylander. The 'In conversation' takes place 12pm-1pm and the performance 'Foremothers: Hat of Pride' takes place 3pm-4pm.

Below Zero Finnish Art Award returns to Beaconsfie

Below Zero Finnish Art Award returns to Beaconsfield, London in association with the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland and Serlachius Museums, Mänttä. The call for applications is open from 7 February until 8 April 2024.

The Below Zero award is open to Finnish and Finland-based artists emerging internationally.
Below Zero offers:
> 6-week London residency January-March 2025, followed by solo exhibition between March and May 2025 commissioned by Beaconsfield.

> Solo exhibition of the Below Zero commission at Finland’s Serlachius Museums, Mänttä, in 2026 with costs covered and optional residency.

The award is worth over £20,000. This includes up to £12,000 earmarked for production (based on an agreed cost budget) and £5,700 to cover artist’s fee and subsistence. In addition, the artist is offered a mentored residency in London, international travel, accommodation, and exhibitions in London and Mänttä. A catalogue in both languages will accompany the Mänttä exhibition.

💫Open Call: Compositions for Actions 2024 is now open!💫

⭐️ The Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland is pleased to announce a new and fast paced Open Call for Finnish and Finland-based professional artists and artist groups and their international collaborators to submit project proposals in performing arts and/or contemporary arts that address the topics of equality, diversity and inclusion.

⭐️ The theme for the 2024 Compositions for Actions Open Call is artistic and socially focused projects that address the democratisation and participatory aspects of performing arts and/or contemporary arts.

⭐️ 1-3 projects will be selected. The total grant for each project will be between 5000€ and 15,000€ (inc. VAT). Projects must take place in the UK or Ireland during 2024 or early 2025.
