Monday 19 September is a national bank holiday to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral.

The Institute will be closed on Monday and will reopen on Tuesday 20 September.

Last week four Finnish creative ageing experts & c

Last week four Finnish creative ageing experts & contributors toured the UK and Ireland to share their work. This short Creative Ageing tour stopped for discussion events in Dublin, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and London. The focus of the events will be culture, arts and creativity in care homes, including how the social care and arts sectors can work together.

It was great to see how much discussion the talks generated and how keen participants were to share experiences, ideas, and best practices. Thank you to all who came to the events, we hope you were able to take away some fresh ideas to be considered and implemented in policies and elderly care in the future!

A major thank you to our Finnish experts: Raisa Karttunen (#ArmasFestival), Sara Kuusi (City of Helsinki), Matti Selin (City of Rovaniemi), and Silva Siponkoski!

We were happy to support this wonderful event organised by the Baring Foundation and Armas Festival.

Autumn is approaching, which also means a new term

Autumn is approaching, which also means a new term of our Finnish classes is about to start!

The Institute offers Finnish language classes for adults, ranging from absolute beginners to advanced levels on weekday evenings and Saturdays. The courses will take place on Zoom and in person simultaneously, so those who want to attend in person are most welcome to our classroom at the Institute in Kings Cross.

Last day of enrolment is Wednesday the 7th of September. Check link in our bio for course times and registration information!

#TheFinnishSauna is officially open! The sauna is

#TheFinnishSauna is officially open! The sauna is part of the London Festival of Architecture, a month-long celebration of architecture and city-making, taking place every June across London.

The Finnish Sauna will be open to the public from Thursday 30 June until Friday 8 July. The sessions are currently SOLD OUT.

The Finnish Sauna is produced by the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland in collaboration with University of Westminster and architect Sami Rintala.

The Finnish Sauna is generously supported by organisations and institutions.

🏆 Nastja Säde Rönkkö has won the Below Zero

🏆 Nastja Säde Rönkkö has won the Below Zero 2023 art prize 🏆

Rönkkö will create a new site-specific video installation. “I feel very honoured and grateful to have been selected to receive the Below Zero 2023 prize. It feels particularly special because it allows me to continue making experimental, multi-disciplinary works in London, a city that was my home for over 10 years,” says Rönkkö.

This is the third time the prize has been awarded. The prize is worth £15 000 and includes a mentored 4–6 week residency in London, materials and an exhibition at @beaconsfield_gallery_vauxhall in London. During the residency, the recipient will realise her project for the gallery. In addition, the @serlachiusmuseums will provide the winner with an exhibition and a residency.

THE EVENT IS CANCELLED DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES

As part of the London Festival of Architecture, on Monday 27 June The Finnish Sauna project will bring to you a free public talk ‘Building Saunas: Sustainability and Architecture’ that brings together concepts and practices of historical design, tradition, and sustainability.

The panel discussion will be with architect, Sami Rintala, and Professor of Architecture and Head of School of Architecture + Cities at the University of Westminster, Harry Charrington. The discussion will be moderated by Minna Sunikka-Blank, Associate Professor and Deputy Head at the Department of Architecture in Cambridge University.
