Join us on 10 December for a day of activities to celebrate the queer heritage of Tove Jansson, a renowned Finnish author, novelist, artist and storyteller.

Supported by the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland, HÄN brings you a day dedicated to celebrating Jansson’s queer heritage – and a broader exploration of family, belonging, queer childhoods, creativity and nature. The event is free but ticketed, please sign up via Eventbrite, link in bio.

Tove Jansson is known internationally as the creator of the Moomin universe, she has become a queer icon for a new generation of LGBTQI+ creatives. At the time of her life, Jansson had to keep her queerness a secret – and yet her artistic journey is full of inspiring stories of queer love, family and self-determination.

At the end of this challenging year, we are looking to create a welcoming queer space and turn to things that bring us comfort in the big city: doodling and making things, foraging, reading and studying queer history. Through a lecture, a workshop and a panel talk, we will look into the lessons we can learn from Jansson’s art and the ways to nurture and support ourselves and each other in today’s turbulent world.

HÄN is an archive and community conceived in 2020 by fashion designer and creative director Ella Boucht. HÄN aims to provide a safe space for queer people to connect and share their creativity.

Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland is looking

Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland is looking for a Chair. As Tommi Laitio will be ending his term as the Chair of our Board in April 2023, we are launching a search for a new Chair. We see that transparency combined with clear criteria provides ideal conditions for finding the best candidate.

We are looking for an insightful leader knowledgeable and networked in the arts in Finland, committed to diversity and inclusion and skilled in good governance. The Chair is the employer’s representative in relation to the Director. An ideal candidate has proven their abilities in inclusive leadership but has a hunger for new challenges. As the board operates in English, we are looking for a Chair able to conduct this position in English.

The foundation has a board of six members. The board meets 4-5 times a year in Finland for a two-hour meeting and once a year in the United Kingdom or Ireland for a one-day meeting. There is no financial compensation for the board membership apart from covering all travel costs.

The process for recruiting a new Chair of the board is as follows:

November 2022: We welcome applications for the role of Chair whilst we also source potential candidates. The candidates will not be disclosed to anyone outside the current board.
We would ask applications to include a simple CV and single page statement of interest as part of their application.
December 2022 – January 2023: Preliminary meetings with the leading candidates.
January: Selection of the candidate.
April 2023: Annual General Meeting where the new Chair will be elected and announced.

To celebrate Aleksis Kivi's Day on Monday 10 October, we will be holding an Open Day where we will be handing out books free of charge. Come browse our selection between noon and 4pm and take home your favourites!

You can see some of the books in these teasers, but we have plenty more at the office. Most of the books are in Finnish and the selection mainly consists of classics, but there are also some newer publications and books in English.

ON COHABITING

On cohabiting is a discussion, walk, and a screening event focusing on Chiswick Eyot, a small island on the river Thames. The event is part of the ongoing work by artist Arja Renell and is based on her long term enquiry into the disappearance of the eyot due to Mitten Crab and Himalayan Balsam.

The introduction of the concept of cohabiting is intended as a term around which we can open up room for discussion and thought, where we recognise our position as being part of, not separate. It might even enable us to question the questions we are asking ourselves in this time of accelerated environmental change.

Schedule:

16:00 CHISWICK EYOT (maximum of 20 participants)

Visiting the eyot during low tide. Guided walk (at own risk) and discussion on invasive species and human involvement/ responsibility.

17:30 CHISWICK HOUSE GARDENS

Visiting the Chiswick House Gardens, discussing colonial history and its role in the global spread (intentional and unintentional) of various plant and animal species.

19:00 – 21:00 CHISWICK PIER HOUSE

Screening of videoworks by Arja Renell and moderated discussion by curator Taru Elfving on the themes of Cohabiting.

Arja Renell is an artist and an architect based in Helsinki. Her artistic work evolves mainly around ecological and environmental issues. She works with video, installation, events, performance and public sculpture.

Taru Elfving is a curator and writer, whose practice focuses on nurturing transdisciplinary encounters and site-sensitive artistic investigations with a long-term commitment to the critical discourses on ecology and feminism. She is the director and co-founder of Contemporary Art Archipelago on the island of Seili in Finland.

The event is supported by the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland.

How can architecture help to address loneliness an

How can architecture help to address loneliness and wellbeing? Which lessons can be extracted from Finnish building praxis?

The Other Approach in Cambridge, 6 October, seeks to provide answers to these questions. You can sign up for the free event via the link in our bio.

The event examines 'living' as suggested by Finnish architecture, which is often qualified as being at a crossroads: of the vernacular and modernism, of the East and West, of natural and high-tech, of the nightless night and of round-the-clock darkness. From such an in-between space, do we have particular insight into mediating between the opposites and extremes that define contemporary life – into approaches that challenge, complement and contradict the global status quo?

This event considers a range of topics from the diversity of living to anarchistic workhomes and Nordic Noir in architecture.

The keynote will be given by Teemu Kurkela of JKMM Architects, Helsinki, with introductory talks by Finnish architects from the University of Cambridge: Prof Dr Minna Sunikka-Blank, Churchill College, Dr Sofia Singler, Homerton College, Prof Dr Antti Ahlava, Clare Hall College (and Aalto University).

Last week four Finnish creative ageing experts & contributors toured the UK and Ireland to share their work. This short Creative Ageing tour stopped for discussion events in Dublin, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and London. The focus of the events will be culture, arts and creativity in care homes, including how the social care and arts sectors can work together.

It was great to see how much discussion the talks generated and how keen participants were to share experiences, ideas, and best practices. Thank you to all who came to the events, we hope you were able to take away some fresh ideas to be considered and implemented in policies and elderly care in the future!

Autumn is approaching, which also means a new term

Autumn is approaching, which also means a new term of our Finnish classes is about to start!

The Institute offers Finnish language classes for adults, ranging from absolute beginners to advanced levels on weekday evenings and Saturdays. The courses will take place on Zoom and in person simultaneously, so those who want to attend in person are most welcome to our classroom at the Institute in Kings Cross.
