Johanna Sumuvuori (MSSc) has been appointed as the Head of Society Programme of the Finnish Institute in London. Renowned for her work as a Member of Parliament of Finland (MP), city councillor in Helsinki, and for various management positions in the NGO sector, she will start in her new position in the beginning of September.
“We received many excellent applications, and selected Johanna due to her strength in creating social change,” says Pauliina Ståhlberg, director of the Institute. “She has shown exceptional talent in actually making things happen”.
Sumuvuori holds a master’s degree in sociology and is currently a postgraduate student at the Department of Political and Economic studies at the University of Helsinki. The roots of her expertise and knowledge of the UK and Ireland originate from her exchange studies at the University of Plymouth, as well as from her year as a visiting doctoral student at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford.
Throughout her career, Sumuvuori has focused especially on questions of development, security policy, culture, environment and social equality.
“We expect her to contribute in creating collaboration especially in the fields of education and equality,” Ståhlberg says.
Sumuvuori will also continue as an expert at the Helsinki based communications agency Ellun Kanat.
